On the 3rd of August 2005, at Crown Casino the AFL announced the Indigenous Team of the Century. The time frame that this team covers is from 1904 to 2004, the 24 men who were chosen for this team are the best of the best. These men not only fought government policies to play the game they loved, but also stereotypical, instutitional racism that reflected society at that time. These men helped make a difference to the game that we watch today. As stated on the AFL webpage, the selection panel comprised of AFL Indigenous Foundation Board Member Pat Dodson, prominent AFL fan and media personality Ernie Dingo, former AFL umpire Glenn James, Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy, AFL National Talent Manager Kevin Sheehan, senior journalists Mike Sheahan and Michelangelo Rucci and AFL historian Col Hutchison. (source) And considering the caliber of the players who would have been nominated, the task to pick the best of the best would not have been an easy one. Some players who are listed in the Indigenous Team of the Century have passed into the Dreaming. As per Aboriginal customs, the names and images of those who have passed on should not be mentioned. I would like to acknowledge their contributions to the game and it is with no disrespect that their names have been published in full. If any family members or community members have taken offence to this, please email me and I wil remove the names and photos. Backs Chris Johnson | Darryl White | Bill Dempsey | | | Half -Backs
